Edouard Manet, Boating 1874 - The Met Open Access Project

Recently, looking around WriterShelf you'd think you were in the classifieds. A preponderance of commercial posts with little (if any) informational value - other than announcing a product or service.

Some barely coherent.

We're not very happy with that. That's not why we made WriterShelf.

  • We created WriterShelf for people who like to write and want a platform to share their thoughts and opinions.
  • We created WriterShelf for authors looking for a place to publish books, novels, histories, how-to manuals, memoirs, technical guides, poetry... or collections fountain pen reviews.
  • We created WriterShelf for people to find friends, interact and build community.
We like the idea of giving authors a means to sell their books - without having to go through additional gatekeepers - or just set up a tip jar for donations.
Maybe we weren't clear, or hard-nosed, enough

In a world of free speech, there's something to be said for allowing a degree of chaff with the wheat but it's time to draw a line.

Going forward, we will enforce our Community Guidelines more rigorously. That means no spam. Dick pill peddlers are not welcome. No to online casinos touts.  Online game cheats begone.

And for those posting endless links to illegal movie streaming sites, please $%@# all the way off and never come back.
Sorry post-farms

Same goes for cut and paste press releases. Either you're going to have to up your game or find other sites to post. If you don't educate and inform - i.e., impart useful knowledge - than you'll find your articles blocked.

We're also going though the back-catalog of articles to cull spam. It'll take a bit.

Our goal: A Welcoming Place for Writers

We want WriterShelf to be a place for writers to feel at home. That's who we made the site for.

We want authors to be comfortable and confident that WriterShelf is worth your time, because we think it is. WriterShelf has a great deal to offer. Going forward, we hope that will be clearer.

And, as a writer, you have ideas on how to make WriterShelf better - or fix things that you think are just plain dumb - let us know. Leave a comment. Send an email. We'll talk.
