On the Primacy of Space and the Dependence of Time
Author: Zhang Suhang, Luoyang, Henan
Abstract
Since the establishment of relativity, modern physics has generally adopted the paradigm of spacetime unity and equal status of space and time, regarding them as parallel fundamental dimensions. Breaking away from this established framework, this paper conducts deductions from five perspectives: philosophical origin, logical structure, Riemannian geometric properties, the field equations of general relativity, and facts of cosmological evolution. It puts forward an independent original conclusion: space is an independent primordial existence, while time is not an independent dimension but a derivative process quantity dependent on spatial structure, matter distribution and energy flow. Even if space and time emerge simultaneously in the physical sequence at the birth of the universe, this by no means places them on equal footing. Space determines and governs time, and there is no symmetry or equality between the two.
Keywords: primacy of space; dependence of time; spacetime asymmetry; ontology; general relativity
1. Philosophical Origin: The Generation Logic of Spacetime from Chaos to Order
The initial state of the universe is chaos, devoid of structure, boundaries, references and metrics.
Within chaos, no definable geometric relations exist. Only with the emergence of massive matter can mass points be defined, forming the first reference benchmark of the universe. With reference mass points, coordinate systems can be established; chaos thereby becomes structured, and genuine physical space takes shape. In short: matter defines space, and references generate geometry. Without matter, there can be no spatial structure, only chaos.
Time does not possess such primordial attributes. Time is essentially a process, a measure of change. All passage of time is driven by energy flow, material motion and spatial deformation. Without dynamic evolution of energy and variation of spatial structure, time loses all definable meaning.
Hence the underlying philosophical order:
Chaos → Emergence of matter → Establishment of space → Energy flow → Generation of time.
Space serves as the substrate of existence, and time is a derivative dynamic phenomenon.
2. Logical Unidirectionality: Irreversibility of Spacetime Deduction as Proof of Spatial Priority
A definitive criterion can be obtained from pure logical structure.
We may derive the rate of time passage, time dilation and local temporal evolution characteristics from spatial structure, curvature state and matter distribution. Space contains complete geometric, structural and field information sufficient to constrain and compute temporal behaviours.
By contrast, no one can deduce spatial morphology, spatial curvature, matter distribution or three-dimensional geometric structure solely from the dimension of time.
Logically, space can generate rules for time, yet time cannot reconstruct space.
This unidirectional deduction proves that space is a more fundamental, primary being, and time is a derived outcome of the spatial system.
3. Riemannian Geometry Evidence: Spatial Curvature Directly Governs Temporal Behaviour
Riemannian geometry focuses on spatial curvature and intrinsic spatial structure.
Physical facts confirm that alterations in spatial curvature directly modify, shift and stretch the local rate of time passage.
Curvature is an intrinsic property of space, a geometric attribute belonging to space itself.
Structural parameters inherent to space can directly govern temporal parameters.
Logically, this leads to one conclusion:
Time has no independent existence; its behaviours are fully dependent on the geometric state of space.
4. Field Equations of General Relativity: Matter Forms Space, and Space Controls Time
The core logic of Einstein’s field equations can be summarised as follows:
Matter and energy curve spatial geometry.
This returns to the initial philosophical premise of the paper:
Matter establishes spatial structure and shapes spatial curvature.
Spatial curvature, in turn, governs time dilation, time passage and spacetime synchronisation.
The complete causal chain forms a closed loop:
Existence of matter → Structuring of space → Generation of curvature → Definition and regulation of time.
The field equations do not support equal status for space and time. Instead, they demonstrate that space acts as the carrier and time as the effect.
5. Facts of the Big Bang: Simultaneous Emergence yet Distinct Primacy
The Big Bang is essentially the process of the creation of matter and ordered structure.
At the cosmological singularity, space and time emerge simultaneously as physical concepts (t=0). This paper does not deny their simultaneity in physical sequence. Nevertheless, simultaneous emergence never equates to equal status.
Before chaos is structured, space lacks reference mass points and time has no metric benchmark. The structuring of space serves as the prerequisite for time to be defined. Even if space and time arise at the very instant of cosmic birth, space remains the substantive substrate, and time remains a derivative process quantity evolving from spatial structure.
Time is a secondary phenomenon arising after the universe becomes structured, when energy begins to flow and matter starts to move.
No space, no time; the evolution of space gives rise to temporal processes.
Conclusion
Synthesising philosophical origin, logical unidirectionality, Riemannian geometric properties, mechanisms of general relativity and cosmological evolutionary facts, a groundbreaking conclusion can be established:
Space is the primary geometric existence of the universe, while time is not a fundamental dimension but merely a dependent process quantity of spatial structure and energy motion.
The core conclusion of this paper is: although space and time emerge together at the birth of the universe, space is the primordial ground and time its concomitant product; space determines time, yet time cannot constrain space.
This is the true order of spacetime structure.
