Why Classical Probability Appears Static

Author: Zhang Suhang

Probability theory first grew out of gambling problems, devised to calculate winning odds in wagers.

I. It took shape at the gaming table

In the seventeenth century, people brought questions about dice and playing cards to mathematicians: How should the stakes be divided? What are the odds of winning?

Probability theory was formed from questions of this kind.

The gaming table constitutes a special setting:

- Dice do not change no matter how many times they are thrown;

- Cards remain unchanged regardless of wins or losses;

- Rules are fixed and the environment stays constant;

- The table itself never alters, no matter how many rounds are played.

This is a closed, unchanging environment with no feedback.

Within such a setting, the statement that "probability is fixed" holds perfectly true.

The environment itself is constant.

II. Classical probability emerged from a closed environment

The probability of rolling a six on a die is one sixth.

This stays true for ten throws, and for ten thousand throws.

Classical probability is not wrong. It simply took shape in an unchanging environment, and therefore appears static.

Within that environment, it is valid.

Later, this method was extended to fields far beyond the gaming table.

When applied elsewhere, no distinction of context was made. People assumed probability in all scenarios should be fixed, just like at the gaming table.

Yet new scenarios are nothing like the gaming table.

The more thefts are committed, the greater police attention becomes.

The wider information spreads, the more different the conditions for subsequent propagation.

As messages reach more people, the audience itself changes.

In these scenarios, behaviour reshapes the surrounding environment.

When the environment changes, probability changes along with it.

Classical probability does not account for this, for it was developed for systems where the environment never shifts.

It is not incorrect. It only fits one type of environment.

The gaming table’s static environment gives rise to static probability.

When applied to changing environments, the theory does not adapt.

This is where the problem arises.

III. Why classical probability appears static

It came from the gaming table.

The gaming table is closed, free of feedback, and unchanging.

That is why its probability appears static.

It is not wrong, but it only applies to one specific environment.

In the real world, most systems are unlike the gaming table.

Behaviour can reshape the environment, and probability is driven forward by frequency.

This is the half of reality that classical probability does not cover.

IV. Conclusion

Classical probability originated from the gaming table.

The gaming table is closed, free of feedback, and unchanging.

That is why classical probability appears static.
